Rev. Dr. Amy L. Chilton
Senior Minister
Amy L. Chilton is Senior Minister at Phillips Memorial Baptist Church and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. She previously held ministerial positions in Oregon and Washington state, and faculty positions teaching theology, religion, and ethics at Wingate University, Gardner Webb University, and Fuller Seminary. She holds a PhD in Theology and Philosophy and a Master of Divinity from Fuller and a BA in Biblical Studies and Ministry from Puget Sound Christian College.
Rev. Dr. Chilton has served in youth ministry, Christian education and outreach, and theological education. One of her passions is the diversity of the global church and empowering local churches in their work with integrating and joining the many voices of her brothers and sisters around the world. She has facilitated local church work with refugee resettlement, multi-denominational relations, and global service work. In her academic work she has explored the lives and theologies of Baptist women, Latin American theologies, and Baptist-Catholic dialogue.
Rev. Dr. Chilton is a member of the Baptist World Alliance Commission on Baptist Doctrine and Christian Unity. She is co-chair of the American Baptist Theology Commission, which works to plan the biennial theology conference. She is on the editorial board of Perspectives in Religious Studies, a scholarly Baptist journal. She is an active member in the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, has served as vice-president and president of the NABPR Region-at-Large, and is a scholar with the North American Baptist Fellowship. In 2020 she co-edited and authored Sources of Light: Resources for Baptist Churches Practicing Theology, published with Mercer University Press.
Rev. Dr. Chilton has one daughter and one dog, Daisy Doodle. Gardening, hiking, camping, the beach, fiber arts, baking, travel, and fellowship over good food are life giving to her. She and her family are bi-coastal, having lived in Washington, Oregon, California, Connecticut, North Carolina, and now Rhode Island. She is thrilled to be joining PMBC!
